I remember summer visits from Aunt Becky and Uncle Gordy. Becky and mom chatting in the kitchen while all the kids spread around the table for breakfast having cereal, reading our cereal boxes. Swimming off the dock, going to Arnold's park, and maybe out in the boat. Mom and Becky would whip up some old favorite soda fountain favorite in the afternoon. and often dinner in the screen house. I remember Aunt Nynie often came at the same time for a visit. It brings a smile to my face remembering the three sisters together. Lots of laughter and smiles. They certainly shared their loves of music, family and church.
Aunt Becky would come down to Spirit Lake (Iowa) no less than once per year, so I got the chance to see her quite often. I always enjoyed having her around as my mother Dorothy and she were quite close. Gordy was always available to play a round of golf with also. Having grown up in Spirit Lake, her parents were Ralph and Florence Doudna, and her upbringing probably helped determine her strong committment to music and church. Ralph was the Choir director for the Spirit Lake United Methodist Church for 25 years, and Florence was the organist for a similiar time period. I don't know how long Becky sang in the local church, but I'm sure it was quite a while. Each of her other 6 siblings also sang in their local church choirs, with the exception of her sister Dorothy, who was organist for 30 years. So you see, the family tradition of service to God through music was quite strong. But I think Becky's love for her family was the strongest commitment that she had. She always kept me updated on what each of her kids were up to, and was always very proud of each one. Although spread across the country, I always knew what they were up to through her. And in my life, It was always 'Aunt Becky and Uncle Gordie'; the change over to just 'Uncle Gordie' will be different and odd. My best to all of the Anderson family in this time of loss, sorrow, and grieving. I will miss Aunt Becky too. With love, Eric Hoien
